Dear Families,

Thank you so much for all of your help with our Thanksgiving festivities.  Today we had our Thanksgiving feast with friends to enjoy our stone soup.  We have talked about what Thanksgiving means and the things in our life that we can be thankful for.  If you get a chance to stop in our classroom, please take a look at our “I am thankful for…” turkey barnyard.

A reminder as we enter our winter season and the weather gets much colder, please send weather appropriate clothing to school with your child—gloves or mittens, hat, boots, and snow pants (when there’s snow on the ground).

We will be focusing on the letters Tt and Ff and the sounds that they say over the next two weeks.  We will also continue to work on our reading strategies:  making connections with spinner spider and making pictures in our mind with picturing penguin.

In science and social studies we will begin talking about our families and family traditions to tie into the upcoming holiday seasons.  We will also begin to explore our 5 senses.  And in math we are beginning to identify and count pennies.

November 11, 2011

Thank you so much for the great turn out we had for Parent/Teacher Conferences!  Almost our whole class was able to attend.  I really appreciate your support for your child and for our classroom.  Please encourage your child to practice their sight words and read their fluency charts to you each night.

As winter seems to be upon us, please remember to dress your child for the weather. When there is snow on the ground, they need to have snowpants, boots, hat, mittens/gloves, etc.  Also, when you send them to school with their boots on, please remember to send tennis shoes for them to wear in school.  They really shouldn’t wear their boots in the classroom.

The students have really enjoyed our new station rotation.  I hope to begin the Read-to-Self part of our reading in December, and we are still in need of a few cereal boxes to make sure that each student has their own book box to read from.

In science and social studies we will begin talking about our families and family traditions to tie into the upcoming holiday seasons.  And in math we are continuing to work on finding the missing number, putting the numbers 0-10 in order.

Also, we are still in need of a CD player or two for our listening station.  The ones we are currently using do not belong to our classroom and will soon have to be given back to the classroom we’re borrowing from.

Cereal Boxes

If you have any empty cereal boxes at home, please send in 1 or 2 large boxes.  We will be making our book boxes out of them when we begin our Read-to-Self time in a couple weeks.  They need to be large enough to fit at 81/2 x11 sheet of paper up and down, as most of the books that they will be reading at first will be the books that they have made themselves.  Thanks so much for your help in this!!

Also, if you have recently upgraded to an mp3 player or iPod and have an extra CD player just laying around that you would be willing to donate to our classroom (even just for the year), it would be much appreciated.  We use our listening station everyday!!

October 28, 2011

Dear Families,

What a week!  Thank you so much for all of the milk jugs that we received!  Our milk jug jack-o-lanterns were a success!!

We began our new reading program and stations this week, and the students are doing great!  I am so thankful, every day, for the nice group of students we have in our room!

One of our new stations is the Listening Station.  The students listen to books on CD each day.  I have 2 personal CD players for them to use—one works all the time, and one works when it wants to.  If you have recently upgraded to an ipod, or mp3 player and would be willing to donate a CD player to our classroom, it would be much appreciated and well loved!

Another piece of our new reading program that we will be starting soon is a Read-to-Self time each day.  Each student will have their own book box of books to read during this time.  For their book box, we are asking for a large size cereal box that we will transform into a customized book box.  If you could send these in as soon as possible, that would be great!

Also, we would like to thank all of you that have participated in our Mileage Club this fall.  We will be pausing our Mileage Club for the winter, and beginning again in the spring.  The last day for Mileage Club this fall is today, Friday, October 28.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about your child or our classroom, or anything really, please feel free to contact me by email or note anytime.
