Classroom Happenings

Reading Month
March is reading month, and it's been a blast so far!!  The students have been very faithful with their reading minute slips, and they've really enjoyed the fun Friday dress up days.  Our last dress up day is this Friday.  It is athlete rest day.  The students may wear any comfy clothes that they'd like, and this includes pajamas.

Our class is in 3rd place for the reading minute race.  Keep those minutes coming!!  It would be fun to win the fieldtrip to the Wex for next week!

Report Cards
Our 3rd quarter is almost finished!!  I can't believe this year has gone so quickly!  The end of the marking period is this week Friday, March 27, and report cards will be sent home next week Thursday, April 2.

A Couple Extras
We have the Safe Boundaries presentation coming up this week Thursday.
After Spring Break we will have Chemical Bank coming in to do a presentation to the 2nd graders on being a smart money saver.

Up and Comings

What a crazy month February has been!!  Hopefully we won't have too many more snow/too cold days so that we can get back to our normal schedule!!

FIELD TRIP RESCHEDULED
A note came home with your child last week telling the new date for our field trip.  We decided to cancel for the forcasted temperatures and then we ended up having a cold day anyways. :) Our new date is Friday, March 6.  I am planning on the same parent chaperones unless I hear differently.  If you are not able to come on this date, please let me know so I can notify other parents of the opening.  These are the parents I'm planning on right now: Katiane Myers, Kelly Gilde, Terry Grames, Bill Warfield, & Megan Johnson.

Details to remember:
All students MUST be dressed in all appropriate winter outerwear to be able to participate in this field trip.  We will be outside for the better part of the day.  We will have our lunch and a hot chocolate break inside.  Please be sure to pack a sack lunch that day with all disposable containers, also.

Book order
With school being cancelled last week Friday and today, I will still accept book orders tomorrow, Tueaday, February 24.  I will be submitting the order tomorrow afternoon.

Star Binders
Please be sure to check your child's binder each day.  Their spelling words and math home link come home in their folder.  Also, please be sure that your child is reading most nights.  Thanks for your continued support in your child's education!!

MARCH IS READING MONTH!!!
This year's reading month theme is sports.  There are several different activities that we will be participating in over the course of the month.  Your child will be bringing home a note and special reading log for the month of March.  Our classroom's sport is basketball.

Updates from School

Parents - just a few quick reminders:

If your child has a temperature of 100 or above, please keep them home until they have been fever-free for 24 hours without medicine.  And be sure to call the office to excuse your child each day they are absent or tardy.

If you need to get a message to your child due to a change in plans/bus arrangements/etc., please call the office before 2pm so there is sufficient time to get the message delivered before the end of the day.

Next week Thursday & FridayJanuary 15th & 16th, are half-days, with dismissal at 11:55 both days (due to exams in MS/HS).

MondayJanuary 19th, is our monthly Delayed Start Monday. All students should be in their classrooms before 10am.

Tuesday, February 10th is Jump Rope for Heart for 1st- 4th graders. (Hoops for Heart for 5th graders isWednesday, the 11th.)

NO SCHOOL on Friday, February 13th due to teachers' professional development and Monday, February 16th due to President's Day.

The PTO wants to remind everyone to keep sending in their labels - Campbell's, General Mills Box Tops, Spartan UPC's, Tyson Project A+ and School Spirit from Soft 'n Good bread wrappers.  It really adds up when everyone participates, and helps the whole school, not just the elementary.

Also, if you purchase propane from Holton's, please send a copy of your receipt to the school office, as the PTO participates in a rebate program through Holton's!

Don't forget to scan your "Community Rewards" card every time you shop at Meijer, as the PTO gets a small percentage of that purchase.  If you do not have a card, please call the elementary office and we will get you signed up!

Hello All!
I hope you are staying warm in this cold and snowy weather we’re having right now!   The kiddos sure are enjoying their time outside to play in it though! With the weather in mind, please be sure that your child has ALL necessary outside clothing to play in the snow each day.  Please also remember to send shoes to school so they don’t have to clomp around in their boots all day.  J

Here are a few notes from the Dates to Remember section:
Our Elementary Christmas program will be Monday, December 15.  Students should arrive at 6:40, and the program begins at 7.  Please have your child dressed in their nicest clothes.

2nd Grade Santa’s Workshop will be on Tuesday, December 16.  The 2nd grade classes will be rotating to each of the three classrooms to create special Christmas gifts and activities to take home to their families.  There will be more information coming.

Our Classroom Christmas Party will be on Thursday, December 18.  We ask that each child takes in a $3-$5 gift.  The girls should bring a gift for a girl, and the boys a gift for a boy.  Please be mindful of the dollar amount of the gift you purchase.  If the gift costs $5.50, please ask your child to choose something else.  Going above or below the range can lead to hurt feelings in during the party.  Thank you for your help!!

There will be more information on school and classroom Christmas events coming home when all of the details get worked out.  Please be looking for these notes, and I’ll keep you posted here as well.

Reading:
Our vocabulary words for this week are: habitat, nature, escape, journey, buried, peeks, restless, and spies.  We practice these words daily in many different ways.  Please take a moment to review with your child what they may have learned about these words.  Our test will be next week Wednesday, November 26.

A new spelling list will be coming home with your child on Monday.  Please review these words with your child daily.  The test will be next week Wednesday, November 26.

We will be discussing the non-fiction genre of expository text again this week.  Our Essential Question is: What are features of different animal habitats? Your child will be excited to share what he or she has learned about these habitats.

Math:
This week we will be continuing our focus on strategies to help us learn and memorize our subtraction facts as well as strategies to help us solve subtraction number stories.
We are working hard on our Rocket Math!  This is to help us memorize our addition facts and see how many we can answer in 1 minute.  The students are really enjoying it!

Thank you again for all of your love and support for your children!  I've spoken with many of you this week on various concerns, and I welcome them all.  I appreciate you working as a team with me and with our school to make your child's education as successful as possible!
