100’s Day

Due ALL of our snow days, we celebrated 100’s Day on Wednesday, February 20^th.

·         We found 100 hidden kisses

·         Estimated and found the actual amount of times we could do various activities within 100 seconds

·         Shared our collections with Kindergarten, 1^st, and 2^nd grades

·         Attended an assembly about 100’s day and met “Captain Zero the Hero!”

·         Wrote about our lives now and what we will expect when we turn 100!

We really enjoyed our 100’s Day Celebration! Thank you for helping your child participate in this fun day!

News from Mrs. Kelley

Parents - A total of $10,633.92 was raised for the American Heart Association from our Jump Rope for Heart Event.  Thanks to all that supported this event.  The American Heart Association sends a huge thank you to our community!  Note...if your child raised money, the thank you gifts will be in in a few weeks.

Cup Stack Tournament - Forms were sent home and need to be turned in by Monday, March 4th, if your child wants to participate.  The tournament is Friday, March 8th during the school day.

Everyday Math

Because of the mixed up week, we reviewed for our test on Wednesday and took our test on Thursday. We took our Mid-Year Assessment on Friday. We will begin Unit 7 on Monday. Unit 7 covers patterns and rules in numbers.

Reading

This week we will be covering the story element plot. We will also discuss phonics skills a, al, au.

Spelling

Spelling this week covers silent consonants mb and kn. As long as we have a full week of school we will be taking our spelling test on Friday!

President’s Day

This week we celebrated President’s Day by learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We made President’s Day Flip Flap Books.  We went on a virtual field trip via Google Earth. On this field trip we visited the birthplace of Washington and Lincoln, went to the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument in DC, and visited Mount Rushmore.  With Google Earth we were able to see these places in 3D and from street level. This is an amazing tool and better yet, we traveled for free!

Greetings!

Hello! I’m so excited to be your child’s teacher while Mrs. Rozeveld is on maternity leave. I taught 2^nd grade last year at McBain, so I am very comfortable with the curriculum and the routines. This is such a great group of kids, which makes me a very lucky teacher! I’m looking forward to working with you and your child while I’m here.

I was out of town for a funeral last Monday and Tuesday, and since we were unprepared for such an early leave, I wasn't able to join the children until Thursday. They had three different substitutes in three days, and with our snow day on Friday and Monday things were a little mixed up this past week. I appreciate your patience as we get rolling!

100’s Day

Due to the snow day on Friday, February 8^th, and Monday, February 11^th, our 100’s Day celebration has been moved to next Tuesday, February 19^th. Please remember to send in a 100’s collection for your child to share by Thursday, February 14^th. We will be displaying our collections while Kindergarten, 1^st, and our fellow 2^nd Graders tour them!

Valentine’s Day

As Mrs. Rozeveld was not anticipating leaving her position so early, our Valentine’s Celebration is being planned on the fly. I apologize for the short notice, but if you are able, would you please provide something for our party? I’ve sent a note along with this newsletter of items we would like to have. If you are able to send something in, please list the item and return the bottom portion of the note. You can also give me a call at the school or email me at sfreeland@mcbain.org to let me know.

Jump Rope for Heart

A note was sent home on Thursday from Mrs. Kelley as a reminder about Jump Rope for Heart. I know it is also our party day, but please make sure that your child is dressed in comfortable clothing that is conducive to jumping rope and that they have their sneakers. Your child may also bring a bottle of water to drink (no Gatorade, etc.) that is labeled with their name. You are more than welcome to join us at this event! We will be jumping from 9-10:30.

Everyday Math Unit 6

We are finishing up Unit 6 this week. Your child will be completing a study guide on Wednesday, February 13^th. The test will be on Tuesday, February 19^th. Please be sure to go over this with your child over the long weekend so that they are prepared for the test. Thank you!

Spelling

Because of the snow day on Friday and Monday, your child will take their spelling test tomorrow, Wednesday, February 13^th. This should give your child some extra time to study!
